Can you tell us about the new apprenticeship scheme?
We believe that all young people deserve the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications that will support their future aspirations. We also recognise that young people have a diverse set of skills and that for many, an academic route through college or university may not be accessible or appealing. The company wanted to offer an alternative which gave the same level of merit but without the added pressure of exams and written assignments. By developing an apprenticeship programme that goes ‘above and beyond’ we are helping to provide young people with new skills and an amazing start in what we know to be an exciting and rewarding industry.
What companies are involved and where in the UK are they based?
We have launched the apprenticeships programme in the claims division in Kent and the Midlands through our brands, Markerstudy and The Policy Shop and are looking to expand throughout the group.
Who is the scheme aimed at?
It’s aimed at 16 to 18 year olds who are looking to pursue a career path in insurance but who prefer to learn ‘on the job’, gaining new skills in a supportive environment.
How will it differ from apprenticeships that are currently available?
Our apprentices do not form part of our usual staff headcount so that they are able to focus on their personal development. The apprentices placed in each business area are also provided with a dedicated team leader who remains with them throughout their programme and supports and guides them on their journey. The company also run a comprehensive two week induction when they start that includes soft skill development to prepare them for a work environment.
Additional benefits include:
- 1-2-1 Skills Scans
- Apprentice Event, Apprentice Live Event – Bristol)
- Level 2 European Computer Driving Licence qualification with British Computer Society
- Institute of Customer Service TrainingMark accredited Customer Excellence Programme
- Chartered Insurance Institute IF1 unit
- Outdoor Team Building Events at Salomons Estate in Tunbridge Wells
- Visits to key insurance related businesses – e.g. Lloyds
- Technical development aligned to their role through our Online -Claims Guild and team of Technical Trainers.
What will employers involved gain from the programme?
Employers benefit by developing a blended programme that nurtures the skills of our future leaders, whilst also providing them with a range of qualifications that will last a lifetime.
What are the benefits for apprentices?
They have the opportunity to learn diverse skills and will gain a number of valuable qualifications above and beyond their NVQ, Technical Certificate and Functional Skills. They will also receive dedicated support from their assessor and team leader and will benefit from working at a pace that suits them without the pressure to manage a high workload.
Why is it important to you that employees gain learning qualifications, including the CII Certificate?
Qualifications provide each apprentice with invaluable experience, confidence and a recognised accreditation in the insurance industry. This will support their progression wherever their career path takes them – although we do hope that this is with Markerstudy!
